This month we have the privilege to spotlight one of our fabulous instructors, Eliza Selan! Let's learn a little more about her!
1. Who are the members of your family?
I am the wife of Benje and mother to our 4 year old son Connor as well as our almost 12 year old greyhound Pinky Higgins and our 6 year old cat Sunshine. I am also mother to be to baby number two due this Fall.
2. Where do you typically teach?
Hillside Park in Ashburn and the Sportsplex in Sterling.
3. Tell us your story about how/why you became an instructor for FIT4MOM Ashburn.
I found FIT4MOM Ashburn a little late, my son was already 2.5, but I loved the Stroller Strides classes and the whole FIT4MOM Ashburn family. When I was asked if I would be interested in teaching I thought it would be a fun way to challenge myself and be a part of the FIT4MOM Ashburn team. Teaching was totally out of my comfort zone, but I hoped to bring my love for FIT4MOM to class and spread the love. Teaching turned out to be a lot harder than I had ever imagined (it’s a lot different on the teaching side than on the “student” side), but I eventually overcame my fears and am really enjoying being an instructor.
4. What is your favorite thing to teach?
I am a runner at heart, so I love cardio and getting everyone moving. Anything that works those legs is a plus, and whenever I get the chance to get everyone to do HILLS I will.
5. What is the BEST thing about being an instructor?
Watching all our moms push themselves and do things they didn’t think they could do.
6. What is your WHY? Why do you keep doing what you do?
I think it’s so important for moms to be able to find time for themselves, but I know how hard it is. I also know how lonely it can be being home alone all the time (especially if you are like me and don’t have family here). FIT4MOM Ashburn makes it easy for me to give myself an hour whether I’m there to workout or teach, and it gives me a great reason to get out of the house and have some adult time with other mommas in a similar situation. I know this will be especially true when baby number two arrives. I also really enjoy helping our mommas push themselves and show our kids how fun it is to exercise. It’s a win win for all of us.
7. What is a fun fact that many may not know about you?
I helped run a Greyhound rescue organization for over ten years. Doing everything from phone screens, to fostering, being VP to a Board member. I’ve personally been lucky enough to have 5 greyhounds adopt me over those years, fostered close to 20 in my home (two of which never left), and helped place hundreds of retired racing greyhounds into loving homes in the DC metro area.
8. Anything else you’d like Our Village to know?
I am so thankful to be a part of such a great group of women, and it really makes me happy to see you all in class everyday. I look forward to becoming stronger with all of you.
